The rust monster does not want to hurt the party. It wants their sword. A CR 1/2 creature infamous for being more threatening to heavily-armored players than most CR 5 monsters, the dungeon encounter that makes fighters check their equipment saves and wizards feel briefly superior. Use it as a classic dungeon pest, the creature that turns metal gear into an actual resource management problem, or the reason the dwarf paladin's ancestral plate mail needs to stay in the bag.
